My new Camera! (??)

Oh boy! I’ve been planning and waiting for a new digital SLR camera for over a year now. I’ve waited on the purchase because of budgeting issues, but also due to no camera in my price range adequately meeting my technical requirements. That has now changed, thanks to Nikon’s announcement of the much-anticipated Nikon D90.

I obviously haven’t touched one of these yet, as they haven’t been released. I have, however, already been sold on this beautiful camera’s predecessor, the Nikon D80. It’s a perfect fit for my hand, has amazing picture quality, fantastic auto-focusing features, and it works with all my Nikon lenses (mostly the older plain AF types that require autofocusing in the body of the camera). I almost bought the D80 a couple times in the past year, but have really been waiting for it’s replacement. In particular, I was waiting for the new CMOS sensor with image sensor cleaning. I was also hoping for slightly better video support and a focus system that is closer to that of the D3, D700 and D300. It looks like Nikon has delivered on all fronts!

I so want this camera!

I so want this camera!

Beyond the awesome capabilities of this camera is one accessory that I also want to add: the Nikon GP-1. The GP-1 is a GPS unit that automatically geotags your photos. This means that it will embed latitude, longitude, altitude, and time information into your digital files with no need for manual geotagging later. As I travel around the UK (and world) on holiday or for archaeological surveys, etc., this geographical data will be nice to have within the photos. Especially now that I am considering a dissertation topic that will require some pretty extensive survey of more than 20 archaeological sites, the geotagging will really help with photo organization and identification of what site each photo belongs to.

This GPS unit will be a big help!

So, no new purchases for me until these items become available. I might have to sacrifice with meals and such for a while, but this is certainly the camera for me. Anyone want to donate to my essential research equipment fund? :D
