This site was started in August 2008 to chronicle our family’s adventures as we moved away from home (Niles, Michigan USA) to live in Durham, England. Darrell has now completed a 1-year Masters program in Roman Archaeology at Durham University, and began his PhD program in October. We plan to continue living in Durham until at least 2012.
Our family consists of:
- Darrell — the Dad (Archaeology postgraduate student)
- Traci — the Mom (looking for employment in Durham)
- Austin — 10 years old (future historian or scientist)
- Reagan — 7 years old (future “keychain maker”)
- Alanna — 6 years old (“princess”)
It is our hope that this site will serve as a chronicle of our adventures living in and traveling around the UK (and other exotic places that are now so much nearer), afford an effective means of communication to friends and family back home and around the world, and also prove useful to other families and students considering graduate studies in the UK or Durham in particular.

Ugh, I remember how Durham never bothered to salt anything; it was absolutely ridiculous! Even though I am rather used to walking on snow and ice, I nearly wiped out too many times to count last winter. I don’t know how those slick paving stones don’t take more lives…
We’ve had snow falling since last night, but it’s not really all that cold, which means it’s melting fairly quickly and there is really more of a slippery slush on the ground than ice. Lots of schools closed here, too, but I don’t think it looks that bad and I’ve seen people out walking and driving without too much difficulty. And it’s due to let up in the early morning hours–thank goodness for that, since I have to go to London tomorrow!
Thanks for the comment, Elizabeth. We actually have a decent amount of accumulation. I went out and shoveled in the car park for a bit, and of the compact snow that’s been driven on repeatedly, we have at least 6 inches… it would certainly be more than that otherwise. I spent about an hour shoveling our car out. Had it nice and clean and drove the car out of the car park for about 1/2 hour only to find that someone had taken my spot. Now, I’m parked on top of the big icy, slushy mess again! The car is staying put for today… will have to see if we can get out tomorrow. The snow is falling pretty steadily once again.
Thats horrible and I know it! I don’t want to go outside until it’s summer!
Thank you. It’s very useful. I’m going to write a proposal for Punjab university in India for Phd on Art history.I am now in Iran and I’m going there next week.

Just a quick heads up but you should check whether the savings accounts are insured by the FSCS. It is the UKs version of the FDIC and insures selected banks for up to £50k per person per insititution.
